Reverend Green

Pastor of the parish whose means of raising money are not heaven sent. Though a man of the cloth, he has feet of clay.

Below is a comparison of the different Reverend Greens and a rating of their hamminess, psychoticness, characterisation and looks (as compared with the boardgame cards). There is also a brief description of the actors' careers.

UK Series 1 - Robin Nedwell

Not a face that I would recognise other than from Cluedo, Robin Nedwell's main acting credits are due to the 60's/70's TV Series "Doctor in the House" and it's several following "Doctor..." series. In these shows, he played the role of Dr. Duncan Waring.

Robin's Reverend Green was a vegetarian who campaigned for "Save The Moles", worried about the local wildlife and was trying to raise money for a mole sanctuary. He was a friendly chap who was polite to most of the murder victims (very rare in this show) and merely became very annoyed and hot under the collar, when they threatened him or the lives of the neighbourhood moles.

Although Nedwell's presentation of the character he was given to play, was quite good; it did not really fit in with the boardgame Green. Also, you rarely believed he would be capable of murder as he seemed so soft.

UK Christmas Special - Derek Nimmo

Another British stalwart appears here, in the form of the hilarious Derek Nimmo. Derek was such a recognisable face on British TV screens, I was shocked to learn that he had never been in a "Carry On..." movie! He just seems one of those people who had to have been in them. Instead, Derek's biggest hit in his 40 year career, was as a monk in the TV series "Oh Brother!" Other major credits include "One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing", "Hancock", "Casino Royale", "Steptoe and Son" and a cameo in "Neighbours".

Like the Green of Series 1, this reverend also looked like he couldn't harm a fly. Worried about his incrimination in some missing church money (a frequent motive for Green over the show's four year run), he walked around with a constant frown on his face and the need to confess to Mrs. Peacock. His character was likeable though and you genuinely felt sorry for him.

UK Series 2 - Richard Wilson

Possibly the strongest and most memorable Reverend Green is Richard Wilson. Merely in the first year of "One Foot in the Grave"'s successful run, Victor Meldrew and the phase "I don't believe it!" were already widely known when Richard appeared in Cluedo.

Richard's Green had a lot more depth and character than most of the other Greens - you believed that he could have a dark past that he was trying to hide and that he was perfectly capable of the crimes committed at the Grange. Richard also had the perfect balance of comedy and pathos.

Apart from his successful "One Foot in the Grave" career; Richard has a thirty year resumé under his belt, including such things as "A Passage To India", "High Stakes", "Mr Bean" and "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em".

UK Series 3 - Christopher Biggins

A very close second to Richard Wilson's Green, was the Green portrayed by Christopher Biggins.

This Green was one minute a convincing reverend of the parish, and another minute shooting death stares at clairvoyants and scoundrels. Like Wilson, Biggins also seemed capable of the Arlington crimes. He only falls slightly short of Richard in my eyes by not seeming to have the same level of poignancy.

Christopher Biggins is fondly remembered in British hearts as Adam Painting in "Rentaghost" and as a co-presenter on Cilla Black's "Surprise Surprise!"; but his other work has ranged from "I, Claudius" and "Poldark II", to the infamous musicals "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

UK Series 4 - Nicholas Parsons

Probably least psychotic of the strange fourth series characters, Nicholas Parsons still rates a 4 on our psycho rating.

Although slightly more convincing as a real person amongst the rest of the ham flying around in this series; Green still had and edge of needing to be sent off to an insane asylum. Despite this though, he was entertaining to watch - as were the rest of the troupe - it's just when you compare this series to its predecessors, you wonder why they felt the need to spoil a perfectly good thing.

Nicholas Parsons has a long career, spanning from the 1940's to the present day. Although a lot of his success has been presenting various quiz shows such as "Just A Minute" - which has been on air for over thirty years - he was a regular face on "The Benny Hill Show" and has much success on stage as the Narrator of "The Rocky Horror Show".
