Nuclear physicist and government advisor. But would his research methods stand the scrutiny of a microscope.
Below is a comparison of the different Professor Plums and a rating of their hamminess, psychoticness, characterisation and looks (as compared with the boardgame cards). There is also a brief description of the actors' careers.
UK Series 1 - Kristoffer Tabori |

Along with Tracy-Louise Ward (the Miss Scarlett in this series) Kristoffer is probably the least known off all of the faces. Unlike Tracy, who currently only has four credits to her name on IMDB, Kristoffer does have a fair sized list of credits; but very few of them are in major parts with his highlights being in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "Chicago Story" and "London Embassy".
This Plum's character and looks are probably the most different from what you would imagine from the classic cards. In the cards, he is depicted as an elderly mad professor type, but here Plum is young and an American businessmen - a lot more like how you would imagine the American Mr. Green.
Despite the difference to the cards, Kristoffer does make an interesting character to watch and the younger age differs him more from Green and Mustard. This Plum certainly seems more murderous than the card he portrays and Kristoffer is probably the best Plum at off-the-cuff remarks during the interviews.

UK Christmas Special - Ian Lavender |

How could you possibly think that the sweet man who played Private Pike in "Dad's Army" could turn into a cold bloodied murderer twenty years later! Ian Lavender does look the part of Plum (though a little young in the face - does that man never age?) but is too sappy to be considered as a valid suspect.
This series is the only one to highlight Plum as an admirer of Mrs. Peacock, making the Scarlett - Mustard - Peacock love triangle, into a square. This was probably dropped again because A) it makes things too complicated and B) Peacock turns him down so badly that he probably never forgave her!
As this fantastic episode did with the other characters, here the British stalwart of Lavender adds to the impressive line up. Lavender will no doubt always be fondly remembered as Pike, but his other credits include "The Glums", "PC Pinkerton" and currently has a main part in "EastEnders".

UK Series 2 - David McCallum |

The second series probably holds the crown for the best acting, with the series emphasising itself as a drama more than the others. This is reflected in David's acting.
With this Plum, you always had the sense that there was something lurking just under the surface of his character, something deeper and darker. On the surface he seemed sweet and helpful (regularly attacking the Grange's rat problems) but you new that an intelligent mind was at work and if pushed, would be a man capable of murder.
David McCallum should be recognised by a wide audience due to his long list of credits. Key credits include Steel in "Sapphire and Steel", Illya Kuryakin in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", Flt. Lt. Simon Carter in "Colditz" and Dr. Daniel Weston in "The Invisible Man".

UK Series 3 - Tom Baker |

What do you get when you mix a Time Lord with a playing piece? You get Tom Baker as Professor Plum.
Tom Baker's Plum undoubtedly conforms to the stereotype of a Mad Professor (in fact, he reminds me of several of my Maths degree lecturers!) but his presence is often creepy and you don't believe he is on the same planet as the rest of the characters. You had very little empathy with the character as he seemed to lack the depth of character that McCallum had achieved.
As well as being the Fourth Doctor in "Doctor Who", Tom has appeared in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair" and "Dungeons & Dragons".

UK Series 4 - John Bird |

Another odd Plum here - this Plum was constantly inventing strange contraptions, blasting hamburgers with flame throwers and killing goldfish with bubbling powders. Series 4 made all characters quirky and Plum was no exception. On the plus side, John Bird pulled off both the intelligent and mad professor sides, was humorous in the interviews and looked the part (to some extent).
John Bird has made many appearances in the impressionist satire series "Rory Bremner" for which he also writes; but other credits include "Chambers", "A Very Peculiar Practice" and "Jonathan Creek".
