The military fiancée of Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard also has the occasional fling with her step-daughter: Miss Scarlett. Colonel Mustard is a former SAS officer with an elusive past.
Below is a comparison of the different Colonel Mustards and a rating of their hamminess, psychoticness, characterisation and looks (as compared with the boardgame cards). There is also a brief description of the actors' careers.
UK Series 1 - Robin Ellis |

As with most of the other characters in the Cluedo television series, the actors who played Colonel Mustard started off relatively unknown and rose to national or even international celebrities by the fourth series. Thus, the first actor to play the colonel was someone who many may not recognise; however Robin Ellis should be recognised by those who watched the "Poldark" television series in the 70's, where Robin played the title role.
Robin's IMDB entries are fairly limited, however his profile page on the Poldark.com website contains several pictures of Robin from some of the dramas and shows that he has appeared in. These include "Fawlty Towers", "The Curse of King Tut's Tomb" and "The Moonstone".
Robin's mustard was quite a likable character, young acting (despite the grey hair) and a true, retired military man who would assert his masculinity and youth by racing Plum, wooing the ladies and entering Politics.

UK Christmas Special - David Robb |

It is quite scary just how close David Robb's Mustard is to the Cluedo card art. He looks perfect for the part and the quiff in his hair is a brilliant finishing touch.
It wasn't just his look though that gets 5 stars on my rating; his character does as well. He has the precise amount of charm and "sex appeal" to have both Scarlett and Peacock fawning over him. He also shows his understanding of the character in a excellent short monologue explaining the spanner and the death of his wife. (Click image to left to view clip).
David Robb is one of those actors who's face pops up here and there. I've seen him on cable a few times in a Scottish drama, but I'm not sure what it is. He had a semi-regular character in "Highlander" (the TV series) called Kalas; played Price Charles in "Charles & Diana: A Royal Love Story"; and has appeared in "Up The Garden Path", "Taggart", "Midsomer Murders", "I, Claudius", "Ivanhoe" (as Robin Hood) and much more. Check out the IMDB link (left) for details.

UK Series 2 - Michael Jayston |

Another veteran of British television, Michael Jayston came to Cluedo with a long history of successful roles. I most fondly remember him as the wimpy Neville from the fantastic comedy "A Bit of a Do"; but his other credits include several appearances in "Dr. Who" (as The Valeyard), "Darling Buds of May" (as Ernest Bristow), "Tales of the Unexpected" and a host of different Shakespeare TV productions.
Although suited to a slightly older version of Mustard than previously seen, this Mustard didn't seem to fit in well with some of the other characters. The age different between himself and Koo's Scarlett made some of their romantic scenes look like a strange father - daughter relationship; and he and Plum (David McCallum) looked a little too similar, leading to the odd bit of confusion when trying to remember which of the two was in a particular scene.
Having complained about his age, the slightly older Mustard did have some advantages. His relationship with Mrs. Peacock was a lot more solid and close; and the relationship with Scarlett took on a different twist, showing Scarlett's domination over his emotions and how she could taunt him into doing whatever she wanted (which added a lot to Koo's character). |

UK Series 3 - Lewis Collins |

Continuity goes awry with this casting of Mustard as viewers would be forgiven for thinking he looked remarkably similar to Elizabeth's estranged husband Jack Peacock, who turned up (before being bumped off) to her wedding to Mustard, in the last episode of series two. But as the main characters changed their appearances every year, I suppose the casting crew may be forgiven and we shall ignore this fact.
This casting worked out well as Lewis' Mustard was quite good. Like David in the Christmas Special, this Mustard was definitely a man for the ladies. His strong presence dominated any scene and it was obvious why Scarlett (Lysette Anthony) was all over him.
Lewis is best known as Bodie to Martin Shaw's Doyle in "The Professionals".

UK Series 4 - Leslie Grantham |

Renowned for being killed by a daffodil in "Eastenders"; where he played the famously evil character Dirty Den; Leslie Grantham had previously appeared in Cluedo as a team member in the Christmas Special.
This Mustard was (like others from Series 4) on the psychotic side of mental state. He even had the facial twitch thrown in for good measure. You did get the impression that he was a former SAS officer; but that he was retired after some sort of incident which left him scarred for life and seeing all foes as The Enemy.
As well as his famous character in "Eastenders", Grantham's other roles include Boyard in the gameshow "Fort Boyard", Estragon in "Waiting for Godot" and Danny Kane in "The Paradise Club".
